DoubleDawg FAQ
- Why have you stopped selling the paid version of DoubleDawg?
- I was only selling one or two a month, and given the work required to support that, I decided it wasn't worth the effort.
- Why the name DoubleDawg?
- The byte which stores the PCI latency timer value is hex 'D' bytes away from the beginning of the PCI configuration block.
The 'Double' comes from the second release.
- Your program wrecked my computer. How can I ever get it working again?
- Though you use DoubleDawg at your own risk, as you consent to in the license agreement, it makes no permanent change to the
computer. It changes a register that exists only in memory, and upon re-boot, the register goes back to the default value
assigned to it by the bios boot process. That's why you need to run DoublDawg every time you turn on your computer.
- Does DoubleDawg work with PCI Express?
- No--that is, it has no impact on PCI-X devices. PCI Express has a similar name, but is an entirely new and better bus architecture that does not involve the sharing/hogging problems that plagued the PCI bus.
The good news is that a PCI-X video card won't interfere with your PCI devices, if you have any. I think most new motherboards only host PCI-X video cards--check your documentation! If you have a
PCI-Express video card, there's a pretty good chance that DoubleDawg will not provide any benefit.!
- The performance of the PCI buss does not get better when settings on low latency devices are tinkered with.
Some users had problems and confusion as a result of this, so I suppressed display of them. Also, there are some devices,
like bus bridges, that appear to have a latency setting that can be adjusted, but really do not. These are also not displayed.
- Will DoubleDawg work with Windows Vista?
- I don't think so. I have read that microsoft completely re-wrote the driver architecture for Vista, and I will not be attempting to re-do DoubleDawg for Vista.
- I can't see my video card, what happened?
- Many new computers have video cards that use PCI-Express. These are not on the PCI buss that DoubleDawg impacts, and they don't get displayed.
- I Noticed you haven't updated it for a long time. Will you be doing any new releases?
- Sorry, but no. The sales of the program are not sufficient for me to invest any more time into it. Also, with PCI-X, the future should be brighter for PC audio interfaces.
- When using DoubleDawg, I noticed a device driver called "Soylent Green" running on my system.
What kind of evil man are you, and are you laughing at me while your program destroys my computer? (Slight paraphrase of actual e-mail.)
- The 1973 dystopian science fiction movie Soylent Green, starring Charleton Heston, should be the basis for every device driver!
This device driver is evenescent, existing only in memory, and disappears as soon as it finishes
placing your latency number byte into the PCI configuration register.
DoubleDawg is available as freeware, I invite you to browse the information I have on this site,
download the freeware if you are interested.
